Marine Life at Crab Island

The emerald waters around Crab Island are home to incredible marine life.

Bottlenose Dolphins

Spotted daily around Crab Island. They often swim right up to boats. Never feed or chase them — it's illegal under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

Sea Turtles

Loggerhead and green sea turtles frequent the area, especially during nesting season (May-October). Keep your distance and never touch.

Stingrays

Common in the shallow sandy areas. Do the "stingray shuffle" — slide your feet along the bottom to avoid stepping on one.

Tropical Fish

Snook, sheepshead, redfish, flounder, and pinfish are all common. Bring a snorkel mask to see them up close in the clear water.

Blue Crabs

The island's namesake! Blue crabs live in the seagrass beds around the sandbar. Watch your toes in shallow grass areas.

Manatees

Occasionally spotted in the bay, especially in warmer months. Federally protected — maintain 50 feet of distance at all times.
